In his new video, “Johnny,” from his album Moral Instruction released last year, the Nigerian rapper remains at the forefront of the #EndSARS and #EndPoliceBrutality movements.
The rapper, lawyer and activist reveals the ordeal of the victims of police brutality in Nigeria, but this time through music. Like the lyrics of the song, the video sines the light on the violence that took place during the #EndSARS protests, culminating in the shooting of Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos by security forces. For many Nigerians, this trigger for mobilization is a point of no return in the fight against police brutality, carried by the hashtags #EndSARS and #EndPoliceBrutality.
Falz is the embodiment of a young man in search of social justice, one who obtained the end of SARS, the Nigerian police unit that was meant to fight against theft, while continuing to multiply exactions in recent years. This is not the first time the artist has denounced the governance of his country. Remember his cover of Childish Gambino’s “This is America,” in a Nollywood version of the famous visual “This is Nigeria.” Just as dark and just as engaged, it was a fitting nod to the original. The rapper has, for a long time, been denouncing the corruption of politicians, as well as the omnipresent insecurity caused by the abandonment of public authorities. It seems that Falz has lost none of his taste for protest, and that is certainly good news.
